My role is a receptionist, switchboard operator and administrator in a small corporate office team, for a national company, based in Croydon.
How long have you worked in front of house?
I’ve worked in front of house for 11 years, both in the UK and in my home country of Australia.
What does a typical day look like in your role?
The thing about my role is there is not really a ‘typical’ day as it changes from one day to the next! There are always the basics that I do – answering switchboard calls, greeting guests on reception, booking meeting rooms for clients and signing for courier items but on top of that there are a range of other tasks depending on what is required that particular day.
These could include: changing meeting room layouts; completing desk moves and updating desk data; raising purchase orders for invoices; ordering stationery and housekeeping stock; booking and assisting with lunches and refreshments for meetings; liaising with contractors and engineers; completing health and safety checklists; updating swipe card passes; assisting with AV requirements for meetings… the list really does go on!
What’s the most interesting thing about your job?
Not knowing what the day will entail! I am always learning something new and facing different challenges. The role of the receptionists is so much more than sitting behind a desk, smiling and answering calls.
What is your favourite part of the role?
Anyone that knows me knows that I am extremely organised, sometimes over-the-top organised! I love that my role allows me to incorporate this strength and use it so that everything runs as smoothly as possible.
However, in contrast to this, I also love that no matter how prepared you are something will always arise that you need to tackle. It’s a good experience to be able to learn what to do in situations that you’ve not faced before, or improve on how you’ve handled situations in the past.
Another thing I love being able to do is interact with different people all of the time and give them the best customer service possible, whatever level they require.
