It wouldn’t be right to sum up 2012 without mentioning what has been billed as the greatest show on earth, the London 2012 games.
Over 10,500 athletes descended on east London from 204 nationalities to take part in the both the Olympic and Paralympic games. There were cynics who stated the London transport infrastructure wouldn’t cope and the construction work would never be completed, however within five minutes of Danny Boyle’s outstanding opening ceremony they had all been silenced.
You could really feel the buzz and sense of pride throughout the streets of the capital. The heroic achievements from the athletes did exactly what Lord Coe promised and ‘inspired a generation’ coupled with incredible efforts from the organisers, the British military and the volunteers – public enthusiasm and national pride were at an all-time high.
We had our very own Olympic stars in Team Exceptional! Adam Wojcik from our Channel 4 contract featured in both the Olympic and Paralympic opening ceremonies. Also, Dymtro Shcherbatov became a very proud parent as he watched his daughter Samantha take part in the Great Ormond Street Children’s hospital piece. David Melnick from the training team also volunteered as a London ambassador and helped tourists find their way around the Olympic park plus Debra Ward got to meet US gold medallist Carl Lewis at an event held by MITIE for clients.
As exciting as the games were we knew back in 2011 they had the potential to disrupt our day to day lives and started to plan very early on to ensure our service to our client’s was not affected. The Olympic planning team helped each site to create contingency plans and provided alternative transport information to the teams to try and reduce any impact the games may have. We sailed through the three month period with praise from many of our clients, highlighting how our committed team members went over and beyond to keep a business as usual mentality for our client’s buildings – some evening working through the night!
Without a shadow of a doubt thousands of people made the 2012 games an exceptional event for millions around the world and created memories which will last a lifetime.
